An Invocation to Hermes

Oh Great One, Swift fleet footed herald of the gods,
You who are the son of the great Zeus and the blessed nymph Maia,
Smiling Lord of shepherds and merchants,
We call to you!

Master of travel, roads seen and unseen,
You who ushers the living after death into the realm of Hades,
Lord of time and space between the worlds,
We call you!

Most cunning and shrewd among the immortals,
God of balanced energies and esoteric magics,
Walker among the dreams of mortals,
We call to you!

Might Hermes,
Come to you at this time of magic,
When life is at its peak and death has waned,
We make offerings to you and ask that you be with us now!

Blessed Hermes accept our offerings!

Hymn to Demeter

Daughter to the Great Titans Kronos and Rhea,
Earth Goddess par excellence,
She who brings forth the fruits of the earth
And the life sustaining grains of the land,
We Pray!

Goddess who forsake the throne and riches offered to Her by Her might brother Zeus,
Father of all the Gods,
So that She could live among men upon the earth,
We Pray!

She who taught man the arts of seed and plow
To end the nomadic lives they lead,
Who became the Goddess of planned society.
We Pray!

Great Beloved Goddess Demeter, Mother of Persephone,
We come to honor and praise you!

In Your sadness from the lose of you daughter,
The world suffered bitter winter and death, finding no relief or joy,
Teaching men that all things end.

With the return of Your Daughter, Persephone,
You allowed life to return to the land sending away the cold winter of death.
With this You taught man that life once gone returns anew to the world,
That the eternal soul of all things flows with the cycle of the land.

Demeter, Goddess of the Eleusinian Mysteries,
We come before You in honor of all Your teachings to man,
We come before You to ask that You burn away our impurities
As You once sought to do with Demophon.

Blessed Mysteries of life, death, and life again are yours,
Great Beloved Demeter.

Greek Libation Hymn

I wrote this after being inspired by a story from the ARCANA MUNDI. It is a book that is about Greek magic and rituals which have been translated from the Greek papyrus scrolls currently held at a Paris museum. The tell really inspired me and I use this libation hymn in all my rituals:

Libation Hymn:

Great Ones, Shining Gods and Goddesses,
I come to you as in times of old, bringing libations, gifts to honor and soothe:

White milk, sweet to drink from the animal sacred Hermes, the cow; (pour offering of milk)

Golden honey, the distillation of the bees that work on sweet Persephone’s blossoms; (pour offering of honey)

Holy water brought from source a pure spring; (pour offering of spring water)

This refreshing, unmixed drink from the ancient vine, its mother Demeter the Goddess of all growing things; (pour offering of wine)

And here the fragrant fruit of the pale green olive that lives its abundant life among the leaves and light of Helios, the gift of Athena; (pour offering of olive oil)

These gifts I give to you in love and in respect, in friendship and kinship.

Might Ones accept my offerings!

Kindred Affirmation and Prayer

I wrote this sometime back. I had been working on my Clergy Training Program material, specifically the section on Liturgy Practicum. One of the essays gets into the mechanics of  writing prayers. It got me to wanting an affirmation and prayer I could use easily that would be both simple and powerful. The following is what I came up with. Let me know what you think.

Kindred Affirmation

Μέσω των προγόνων κερδίζουμε το θάρρος.
Me-saw    tawn  pro-gon-awn  ker-de-zoome tah   thah-rros.
Through ancestors we gain courage.

Μέσω των πνευμάτων φύσης βρίσκουμε την ειρήνη.
Me-saw  tawn    pnel-mahtawn   fus-ais bris-koome      tain   hee-rain-ai.
Through nature spirits we find peace.

Μέσω των Θεών μαθαίνουμε τη φρόνηση.
Me-saw    tawn   the-awn  mah-thigh-noome  tai   fronai-sai.
Through gods we learn wisdom.

Μέσω του σογιού είμαστε ολόκληροι.
Me-saw    too  so-gi-oo  hee-maste   holo-kler-oy.
Through the kindred we are whole.

Hymn to Persephone

As I am the leader of the DEO group I work closely not only with Demeter but with Persephone as well. Here is a hymn I wrote to Her which was used during a ritual honoring the return of spring and Persephone to the world.

Persephone Invocation

Daughter of the All Father Zeus and Demeter, Earth goddess of growing things,
Hear our call, we pray!

Queen of Spring, flowering goddess of new life, Kore,
Hear our call, we pray!

With the return from your throne in the under world, the home of your beloved husband, Hades brother of Zeus, You bring life back into the world that has been cold and barren from the sorrow of your loss.

With the return to your scared gardens, Kore,
You bring to mankind the promise of life beyond death, the promise that death is not the end for our immortal souls.

You who are the Queen of the Dead,
You how were given power of eternal life,
Hear our call, we pray!

Great Queen to touches all in life and in death,
Hear our call, we pray!

Glorious youthful goddess Kore,
We call to You and ask that you please hear our call,
We invite to our ritual in honor of you,
We invite you to our ritual to welcome the enlightenment you bring!
Blessed Kore be in our grove!

Daily Devotionals... a good way to touch the divine

One of the best ways to help get yourself connected to the cycles of life on a daily basis are through daily devotionals. I have a set of devotionals I perform each day that help me wake up in the morning, center my mind throughout the day and relax as the day ends. Though the prayers themselves become set words, it helps as a trigger for the mental and emotion state I am trying to achieve through these moments of worship.

Morning Devotionals

                Sun Rise Devotional

As the sun rises refreshed and renewed, as do I rise into the new day.

                Prayer to the Kindred

Through the Ancestors we gain courage.
Through the Nature Spirits we find peace.
Through the Gods we learn wisdom.

Through the Kindred we are whole.

                Ganesha Devotional

Great and noble Ganesha, wise and youthful dancing lord who opens the way for
                humankind;
I come before you, setting flame to candle and incense in your honor.
I ask that you open the way for me and my own, that we shall traverse this life with the
ease of your love Blessed One!

Chant:  ॐ गम गणपतये नम: (Om gam ganapataye namaha!) [performed 108's per set.]

Sunset Devotional

As the sun sets upon another day, I release the worries and burdens that have done before.

Night Devotionals

                Hestia Devotional

Lady of the sacred flames, you whose throne lives in the hearth of every home, I light this
flame in your honor and ask that you protect this home and all within its walls, fill it with
your radiant light. Glorious Hestia, always be the light in my heart.

                Demeter Devotional

Demeter, warm golden wheat crowned queen of growing things, beautiful and radiant
goddess of purification, I light this flame in your honor, and ask that you teach me your
ways, and cleanse my soul from human frailties, that I may grow closer to divinity.

                Persephone Devotional

Blessed daughter of Zeus and Demeter, shimmering light of spring, goddess torn between
two worlds,  you who are the queen of flowers, you are the queen of the Blessed dead, you
who were given the power of eternal life, I light this flame in your honor, Persephone, I ask
you teach me your ways of life, death, and life again so I may know eternity.

                Hekate Devotional

Hekate, lady of torches, light in the darkness, I light this flame that you will shed your light
                upon me.

                Hermes Devotional

Hermes, swift and smiling lord, I give you this burning fragrance in offering, and ask that
you allow me to see and travel in dream. I ask that this flame ever light my way when I
                return home.

                Libation Devotional

Great Ones, Shining Gods and Goddesses,
I come to you as in times of old, bringing libations, gifts to honor and soothe:
                White milk, sweet to drink from the animal sacred Hermes, the cow;
                Golden honey, the distillation of the bees that work on sweet Persephone’s blossoms;
                Holy water brought from source a pure spring;
This refreshing, unmixed drink from the ancient vine, its mother Demeter the Goddess of
                all growing things;
And here the fragrant fruit of the pale green olive that lives its abundant life among the
                leaves and light of Helios, the gift of Athena;
These gifts I give to you in love and in respect, in friendship and kinship.
                Might Ones accept my offerings!
                Prayer to the Kindred

Through the Ancestors we gain courage.
Through the Nature Spirits we find peace.
Through the Gods we learn wisdom.

Through the Kindred we are whole.

                Bedside Devotional

As darkness and rest fall upon the world I lay my head into the hands of the gods in perfect
love and in perfect trust until the light of dawn. Awen and Blessings Be!

Invocation to Demeter

The following is a ritual invocation to Demeter which was written for use in an ADF Grove. At the time this was written I belonged to Grove of the Red Earth, ADF. Demeter is one of my Patrons so I want to share this with those that read this blog.

Invocation to Demeter
By David Crawford; Grove of the Red Earth

Daughter to the Great Titans Kronos and Rhea,

Earth Goddess par excellence,
She who brings forth the fruits of the earth
And the life sustaining grains of the land,
Hear our call we pray!

Great Beloved Goddess Demeter, Mother of Persephone,
Hear our call we pray!

In Your sadness from the lose of you daughter,
The world suffered bitter winter and death, finding no relief or joy,
Teaching men that all things end.
Hear our call we pray!

Be in our grove we pray!
